Report it when you apply

The Department of Foreign Affairs says you can report your passport as lost or stolen when you apply for your new one. Tell the Passport Service in the online application that the passport is lost, stolen or damaged 1.

If you cannot apply online, call Passport Assist on 01 613 1795. The team generates an application form and a statement of loss, theft or damage. Passport Assist applications take about 6 weeks on average 1.

Adults whose last passport was lost or stolen must give further proof of identity. The Passport Service will contact you if you do not submit a Public Services Card 3.

Report it without applying

If you do not plan to apply for a new passport yet, report the loss or theft to the Gardaí. Then post the Garda certificate of loss and a signed letter asking for the passport to be marked lost or stolen to Customer Care, Passport Office Dublin, Knockmaun House, 42-47 Lower Mount St, Dublin 2 1.

The department recommends telling the Gardaí in any case, to protect yourself from identity fraud 1.

Fees

The Passport Service lists these fees 2:

  • Public counter appointments in Dublin and Cork are for renewals and add a €150 same-day or €75 four-day appointment fee 2.

If you are abroad

If your passport is lost, stolen or damaged overseas and you need a travel document to get home, your nearest Irish embassy or consulate may be able to help 1.

You cannot get an emergency or temporary passport through Passport Online. If you live overseas, contact your local Embassy of Ireland 3. Emergency passports are issued strictly in emergencies such as the death of an immediate family member abroad or urgent medical treatment, and the Passport Service asks for proof 3.

What happens to the old passport

The Passport Service reports the details to Interpol and the passport is no longer valid for travel. If you find it after reporting it, do not travel on it 1.

The next passport may have restricted validity. Losing two or more passports may mean you get a passport valid for between 1 and 10 years, depending on how many you lost in the last 10 years. Processing may take longer 1.
