Declare the passport lost or stolen
The Department of Internal Affairs asks you to tell it as soon as possible if your passport was lost, stolen, damaged or involved in a data breach or scam 1.
If you need a new passport straight away, apply for one and declare the loss in your application. Your old passport is cancelled as part of the process 1.
If you do not need a new passport yet, still declare it to prevent identity theft and illegal use. Use the online declaration form or the paper form PAS201. The passport is cancelled and an alert is added to your record 1.
When you need a police report
If your lost or stolen passport was still valid, you must report the incident to the police and include the police report reference number in your declaration 1.

If you are outside New Zealand
You can apply online for an urgent passport from anywhere. It can be quicker, cheaper and valid for longer than an emergency travel document 3.
An emergency travel document is a temporary document to return to New Zealand or your usual country of residence. You can apply if you are outside New Zealand, your passport is lost, stolen, expired or damaged, you need to travel urgently, and you will not get a new passport in time 3.
It costs NZ$685 and is usually valid for 7 months. Before it expires you send it to the Passport Office for a standard passport. Not all New Zealand embassies and high commissions issue them, so contact yours first 3.
Some countries, like the USA, do not accept emergency travel documents for entry, even in transit 3.
Urgent help
If you need to travel within 2 days, call the Passport Office at once on 0800 22 50 50 (New Zealand only) or +64 4 463 9360 1.
