How to apply for a new passport
The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) takes passport applications online. You fill in the form, upload documents, pay and book an appointment, then attend the passport office you chose for photo and biometric capture 1.
Nigerians in the diaspora submit applications at the nearest Nigerian embassy, high commission or consulate 1. The NIS passports page does not list a separate set of requirements for lost passports, so check with your passport office or mission.
Fees
NIS announced new fees on 28 August 2025, effective 1 September 2025, for applications made in Nigeria 2.
- Missions can add their own charges. The Nigeria High Commission in London charges £150 by UK postal order to replace a damaged, lost or stolen passport 3.
| Passport | Fee in Nigeria | Diaspora fee |
|---|---|---|
| 32 pages, 5-year validity | ₦100,000 | US$150 |
| 64 pages, 10-year validity | ₦200,000 | US$230 |
Replacing a lost passport abroad (London example)
The Nigeria High Commission in London lists these items for a lost or stolen passport 3:
- A letter to the High Commission stating the reason for replacement
- A completed Lost Case form
- A copy of the old passport data page, or the passport number
- A police report clearly stating the loss of the Nigerian passport
- A copy of a guarantor's valid Nigerian passport data page (the guarantor must be Nigerian and know you)
- Two recent photos, one endorsed by the guarantor
- Proof of UK address, and the online payment slip, application form and appointment slip
Emergency Travel Certificate
If you need to go home before a new passport is ready, Nigerian missions issue an Emergency Travel Certificate. The London High Commission says it is for an immediate one-way departure to Nigeria only and is valid for 30 days from issue. No appointment is needed 3.
London asks for a letter explaining why you need it, two photos, a police report, a copy of the lost passport, more ID, a copy of a guarantor's passport and utility bill, and an airline ticket to Nigeria 3.
Fees vary by mission. The Embassy of Nigeria in Greece charges a €50 service fee and asks for a letter, a copy of the lost passport data page, a police report, two photos and your travel plan 4.
What happens to the old passport
The NIS and mission pages we checked do not describe what happens to the record of a reported passport. Ask your passport office when you apply. A police report naming the passport is part of every lost passport file listed above 3,4.
